Grandparents' Association Reception at 10 Downing Street
On 15th of January 2008 Mary McEvoy attended a reception at 10 Downing Street hosted by Sarah Brown, wife of the Prime Minister as a guest of the Grandparents’ Association . It was held to celebrate the Association’s 21st anniversary and was attended by about 120 guests, including staff and volunteers as well as judges, magistrates, psychotherapists, child psychiatrists and family solicitors, the editors of Good Housekeeping and of Bella magazines and financial supporters and fundraisers. Also present were Michael Palin, Gloria Hunniford and Patti Bulaye.
The meeting was addressed by Sarah Brown who welcomed the guests and spoke with conviction about her high regard for the work of the Grandparents’ Association; by Ed Balls Minister for Children, Education and Families who made a witty and amusing speech and who reiterated the government’s support for families, paying tribute to the importance of grandparents in supporting families and by Michael Mansfield, from the Hearst publishing group which supported the event.
Mary met some very interesting and entertaining guests and spoke to Maggie Darling wife of the Chancellor Alistair Darling, who expressed considerable interest in the difficulties faced by women seeking domestic violence injunctions, and the problems caused by the withdrawal of solicitors from the legal aid scheme.
